Ross Caping Trip – Camping family photoshoot
Some of my fondest memories growing up are of camping trips. The 6 of us would pile into the van and we would camp across North America for a few weeks in my parents vintage Apache camper. I think these frequent camping trips sparked my love of travel. I remember falling in love with the mountains in Banff and wanting to live somewhere surround by mountains when I was an adult. Luckily, Vancouver has fulfilled that dream – and without the winter!
I really wanted a photoshoot centred around my parents cool vintage camping trailer – it always amazes me that 6 of us lived in there for weeks and didn’t drive each other too crazy! I planned for us to all wear plaid – my mom and I carefully bought and planned all the plaid shirts, we wanted to make sure we didn’t have too much red or blue plaid!
Ross family photoshoots are always interesting. Our previous sessions from Christmas and Thanksgiving, are always quick and a at least one of my younger brothers is always grumpy, or upset at the clothes I chose for them. I wanted something a bit more posed for this session, and brought my external lighting system and set up the timer on my Canon 5D Mark 3. It’s wonderful have a full backup lighting system with me at weddings in case natural light isn’t the best, and its fun practicing with it! This session was no different, with the young-un’s complaining that the session was too ‘posey’ and with helpful suggestions on how to make the photoshoot better. Thanks guys.
This camping trip was a bit different than the others – my father and his twin sister had recently lost their older brother. These three siblings also spent a lot of time together growing up outdoors and apparently were the original hipsters, ahead of the trend with my Dad’s glasses, uncle’s big beard and my Aunts canvas all-stars! It was important to my mom that we captured a photo with my dad’s sister’s family and one of these is now hanging in her living room.
Camping as a vegan is always fun! After many vegan camping trips with friends, I think I finally have it down pat, and look forward to eating junk food all weekend. This was a fav from the weekend, a vegan chili cheese dog!

This is the first photoshoot that my aunt, cousin and uncle have taken part in, and they were the best behaved of the group. I have at least 20 photos while I was setting up the lighting, where these three were on point in every photo, eyes open, clothing perfect and smiling at the camera. My family, on the other hand, was goofing off, throwing things at each other and running off. Also, their attire was perfect, and they even brought the right footwear and socks! Thanks Auntie Arlene!
